“Gideons Book”

I get daily bible reading suggestions on my phone. One day the story of Gideon popped up. I remembered the story and then searched the reference to the Gideon Bible society and all the good they’ve done. I used to work downtown Toronto in a show and became familiar with a lot of street people that lived and “worked” the area. A fellow I recognized came up to me one night and asked me “Hey buddy, can you give me Seven Hundred bucks? Cause that might get me outa here for good.” We both laughed I gave him what I had…I don’t remember ever seeing him again. Maybe he got his stake.
This song is set in a soup kitchen where a guy who finds his answers, in the Gideon Bible with a bowl of soup and a crusty bread. It’s not a twilight zone episode – this stuff happens daily. It just doesn’t make the news.
I used to belong to a church called "Jesus was Homeless" in Branson Missouri. We made and delivered meals for homeless people and many families on the down and out. The church had a 12 step program to get jobs for the needy. It involved counselling, physical fitness, new clothes, a dentist, haircuts and job interview coaching. It worked nine times out of ten. That Church walks in the footsteps of Jesus.

GIDEON’S BOOK © Joseph Ress

Ten bucks a night and the book was free
A warm bowl of soup, and a hard crusty bread
I was a lost sheep searching for amnesty
And then a man stood up and read
about -
Gideon a farmer, fearful but true
Gideon a soldier who lead just a few
Gideon a young man who followed God’s word
But I heard some truth in those words

Another cold night out on the street
Coming from nowhere bound back to the same
My ears still echo with the Devil’s deceit
Out on a limb again
and I said -
(Gideon) won’t you, (walk with me)
(Gideon) I’m lost, I (can’t find my way)
(Gideon) I’m in darkness, (what should I do)
He said, read this good book it’s my gift to you.

I read the story ‘bout the Prodigal Son
And a father that (prayed)
He would come home again
About a young boy and a giant and
How he changed the world with a
(Sling and a stone)
And an Arc full of animals
And a family of faith in the
(Rain), starting over
And the brothers of Joseph,
Who sold him to slavery, but he forgave them

(Forgiveness - forgiveness - forgiveness)

And then -
(Gideon), came and (walked with me)
(Gideon), I was blind, but I’m (beginning to see)
(Gideon), going home cause I (found the key)
I said read this good book, (it’s my gift to you)

(I read - Gideon’s Book)
(Do you read - Gideon’s Book)
(I read - Gideon’s Book)
(Do you read – Gideon’s Book)
